Contact lenses fitted to your needs

There is no single contact lens that is right for everyone. Your prescription, eye health, lifestyle and visual requirements all influence which lenses are most appropriate.

We fit a wide range of lens types, including:

Daily contact lenses

Daily disposable lenses are worn once and then discarded. They can be a convenient option for occasional wearers, busy lifestyles or anyone who prefers not to clean and store lenses.

Two-weekly and monthly contact lenses

Reusable lenses can be worn according to the manufacturer’s recommended replacement schedule, with appropriate cleaning and storage. They can be a practical choice for regular contact lens wearers.

Toric contact lenses

Toric lenses are designed to correct astigmatism. They have a specialised design that helps provide stable vision where the shape of the eye requires a more complex correction.

Multifocal contact lenses

Multifocal lenses can help people with presbyopia see clearly at different distances. They can reduce the need to switch between glasses for reading, computer work and distance vision.

Myopia control contact lenses

For children and young people with progressing short-sightedness, specialist myopia control contact lenses may be an option. We can assess suitability and discuss the available approaches with you.

Complex contact lens fittings

Some prescriptions require more specialist consideration. We fit contact lenses for patients with high levels of astigmatism, dry eyes and presbyopia, as well as children.

A successful fitting is about more than simply matching a lens to your prescription. We consider how the lens fits your eye, how comfortable it feels, how well you can see and how suitable it is for your everyday life.

If you have previously struggled with contact lenses, that does not necessarily mean they are unsuitable for you. Different lens materials, designs and wearing schedules may provide a better experience.

New to contact lenses?

If you have never worn contact lenses before, the idea of putting a lens in your eye can seem daunting. We make the process straightforward and give you plenty of time to learn at your own pace.

Our fitting process includes:

1. Suitability check

We assess your eyes, prescription, lifestyle and visual requirements to establish whether contact lenses are suitable for you.

2. Personalised lens recommendation

We recommend lens options based on your individual needs rather than simply choosing the most convenient lens.

3. One-to-one training

We show you how to safely insert and remove your lenses. You will have the opportunity to practise with guidance until you feel confident.

4. Vision and comfort assessment

We check how well your lenses fit and how clearly and comfortably you can see while wearing them.

5. Aftercare guidance

We explain how to look after your lenses and your eyes, including cleaning, storage, replacement and safe wearing habits.

6. Ongoing follow-up

Contact lens care does not end when you leave your initial fitting. Follow-up appointments allow us to check your vision, lens fit and eye health and address any concerns.

Contact lens care and aftercare

Good contact lens hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy eyes.

Your optician will give you specific advice based on the type of lenses you wear. This can include guidance on:

  • Washing and drying your hands before handling lenses
  • Correct cleaning and storage of reusable lenses
  • Following the recommended replacement schedule
  • Using the appropriate contact lens solution
  • Avoiding sleeping in lenses unless specifically prescribed for overnight wear
  • Following the recommended wearing schedule
  • Keeping your contact lens case clean and replacing it when advised
  • Attending recommended aftercare appointments

Never use tap water to clean or store contact lenses, and do not share lenses with anyone else.

If your eyes become painful, very red, unusually sensitive to light or your vision changes suddenly while wearing contact lenses, remove the lenses and seek professional advice promptly.

Contact lenses for children

Children can wear contact lenses successfully when they are ready to take responsibility for safe lens handling and hygiene.

We can fit children and assess whether contact lenses are appropriate based on their age, maturity, prescription, lifestyle and ability to follow safe wearing and cleaning routines.

For children with progressing myopia, specialist myopia control options may also be considered. We can discuss the available approaches and whether they are suitable for your child.

Contact lenses and dry eyes

Dry or uncomfortable eyes do not automatically mean you cannot wear contact lenses.

We assess the health and comfort of your eyes as part of the fitting process and can consider different lens materials, designs and wearing schedules where appropriate.

If you already experience dry eyes, tell us about your symptoms. This helps us recommend an approach that takes comfort as well as vision into account.

Why choose Whitehouse & Son Optical?

We believe contact lens fitting should be a personal service rather than simply choosing a lens from a catalogue.

Our approach combines:

  • Personalised lens recommendations
  • A wide choice of lens types
  • Experience with complex prescriptions
  • Contact lens fittings for children
  • One-to-one insertion and removal training
  • Clear advice on lens care and hygiene
  • Ongoing aftercare and eye health monitoring

Our aim is to help you achieve clear, comfortable vision while keeping your eyes healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A glasses prescription cannot simply be transferred to contact lenses. Contact lenses sit directly on the eye, so they require their own assessment, fitting and prescription.

Yes. Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism. We can fit patients with high levels of astigmatism and assess which lens design is most suitable.

Potentially. Dry eyes can affect contact lens comfort, but they do not automatically rule out contact lens wear. We can assess your eyes and consider suitable lens options and wearing schedules.

Possibly. Multifocal contact lenses are designed to provide vision at different distances and can be an option for people with presbyopia. Your optician can assess whether they are suitable for you.

There is no single best lens for every new wearer. Daily disposable lenses can be convenient for some people, while other lens types may be more appropriate depending on your prescription, eyes and lifestyle.

We will recommend the most suitable option following your assessment.

Yes. Children can wear contact lenses successfully when they are sufficiently responsible to handle and care for them safely. We fit children and will assess suitability on an individual basis.

Myopia control contact lenses are specialist lenses designed to help manage the progression of short-sightedness in children and young people. They are different from standard contact lenses used simply to correct vision.

We can assess your child’s eyes and discuss whether myopia control may be appropriate.

Everyone learns at a different pace. We provide one-to-one insertion and removal training and allow you time to practise until you feel comfortable and confident.

This depends on the type of lens. Daily disposables are replaced every day, while two-weekly and monthly lenses are replaced according to their specified schedule. Always follow the replacement instructions provided for your lenses.

You should not sleep in contact lenses unless your optician has specifically prescribed lenses and a wearing schedule that allows overnight wear. Sleeping in lenses when they are not approved for this purpose can increase the risk of eye complications.

Remove the lenses and allow your eyes to rest. If discomfort persists, or if you experience pain, significant redness, light sensitivity or a change in vision, contact us for advice promptly.

Yes. Regular aftercare allows us to check your vision, lens fit and eye health and make sure your lenses remain suitable and comfortable.
